Dachshunds are very good beggars. They are extremely patient and just look super adorable all the time. But sometimes it is very important to do resist those puppy eyes, because some foods are extremely harmful for your doxie. Here are a few of them:
1. Macadamia nuts
Macadamia nuts are without a doubt poisonous for dogs. These nuts are one of the few things of which even a small amount could be fatal to your dog. Small amounts also include body lotions your dachshund licks off your legs!
2. (Red) Onions, garlic, shallots, leeks and chives
You might not expect this, but onions, garlic, leeks and chives are like poison for your doxie. Just like humans probably will not die of a little bit of poison, your doxie will not either. But feeding this to your dachshund two days in a row could already cause serious damage to your doxie’s immune system.
3. Nutmeg
Keep all foods that contain nutmeg away from your dachshund. Nutmeg contains a chemical which can cause seizures and problems with your dog’s central nervous system.
4. Peach Pits
You probably was not expecting this, but the pit inside a peach can kill both you and your dog. The high level of cyanide inside the pit is extremely deadly.
5. Alcohol
Doxies are very small, so a good glass of wine can be very dangerous because your dog’s little body won’t be able to cope with so much alcohol.
6. Raw chocolate
You can read all about it in The Truth About Chocolate.
7. Tomato plant
Not the tomato (unless unripe), but the tomato plant itself is very dangerous for your dachshund. Tomatine and Solanine, both of which are found in the tomato plant, are seriously toxic for dogs.
8. Gum
Giving your dachshund gum is an absolute no go. It can seriously mess up your doxie’s digestive system or even worse: your dog could choke on it.
This list is of course not complete, because there are so many foods that could hurt your dachshund. But this is definitely a solid top 8 of most dangerous foods for your dachshund. If you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.
